Back Roads Tour

The Gatewood & Riley Back Roads Tour began simply as a good idea.  Mr. James Overbee, an up and coming Appalachian musician with a one of a kind sound, having just returned from the Nashville music scene met Gatewood Galbraith and Dea Riley at a local music event.  He spent time with them, got to know them and for the first time in his life he felt he had met two people that made sense, were dedicated to the people of Kentucky and who’s hearts seemed to be in the right place.  He took away from that meeting Gatewood Galbraith’s book “The Last Free Man in America” and over the next two days read the book aloud with his friend Bradley Flinchum.  Although young, James and Bradley were wise beyond their years.  They both had grown up in the poverty-plagued Appalachia, listened to countless promises by elected officials and watched as they broke each one time after time.  They continued to witness the steady decline of Appalachia.  Due to this adversity they are wise beyond their years.  Fed up by corrupt government surrounded by the despair their generation faces, they became inspired to make a difference, get involved and to change the failing course of Kentucky.

James figured he knew just about every musician in Appalachia and that many more all over the state – every good one that is - and it was his idea to contact fellow musician and ask them to play for the Gatewood & Riley 2011 campaign to help bring awareness to the people.  His goal was to create a statewide network of musicians who would each play a concert, fundraiser or event in every county and donate the proceeds from the concerts to the campaign.  Music is what James Overbee knew and what he could give.  James took a lead role in organizing the effort and through his work he has recruited others to help.  All he needed then was a name - The Gatewood & Riley Back Roads Tour was born.

The series now boast more than 100 musicians who have volunteered to play and the list continues to grow.  The goal is to play a concert in every Kentucky County, to provide every event with talented musicians and to host an official concert tour of Kentucky’s most talented musicians with the creation of several outdoor concerts.  Together we can Restore Kentucky to Prosperity.
